Why it works

The winter version of old-money dressing relies on heavy wool and layering. Summer takes all of that away, so the look has to come from colour, fabric and drape alone. A brown linen shirt does a lot of the work: brown is richer than white and less formal than navy, and in linen it takes on an earthy, sun-faded quality that feels expensive rather than casual.

Ecru pleated trousers are the second half of the equation. The pleats add room through the hip, which means air moves and nothing clings in humidity, and the wide straight leg swings when you walk. Ecru, rather than bright white, keeps the palette soft and forgiving of the occasional coffee splash.

The shoes are deliberately undone: unlined suede loafers without socks. Together the pieces suggest someone who has spent summers by the sea for years, which is the whole point of the aesthetic.

Styling notes

  • Leave the shirt untucked only if it has a straight hem; otherwise tuck it loosely.
  • Roll the sleeves just below the elbow, twice, for a neat finish.
  • Linen creases. Steam it before you leave, then let it relax.
  • A white linen shirt or a cream knitted polo works the same way.

The breakdown

  1. Brown linen shirt

    Chocolate or tobacco

A camp or soft point collar, worn open two buttons, sleeves rolled twice. Brown linen looks richer than white and hides the day's creases better.

    Budget
A linen-cotton shirt in tobacco brown.
    Mid
Pure European linen, garment-washed for softness.
    Investment
Heavy Irish or Italian linen with mother-of-pearl buttons.
  2. Single or double pleats, a high rise and a wide, straight leg that moves in the breeze. Linen, cotton or a linen-wool blend; ecru rather than white.

    Budget
Cotton-linen pleated trousers with an elasticated back.
    Mid
Pure linen pleated trousers with side adjusters.
    Investment
Linen-wool or linen-silk trousers, tailored for drape.
  3. Unlined suede loafers, worn sockless. The soft suede reads relaxed; polished leather would be too formal.

    Budget
Suede loafers with a rubber sole.
    Mid
    Unlined suede loafers, Blake-stitched.
    Investment
    Hand-sewn unlined suede loafers.
  4. Woven belt

    Tan

A braided leather belt in tan to match the loafers. The texture suits linen.

    Budget
    Elastic woven belt in tan.
    Mid
    Braided leather belt.
    Investment
    Hand-braided Italian leather belt.
  5. Sunglasses and a simple watch

    Tortoiseshell, gold

Tortoiseshell sunglasses and a slim watch on a leather or canvas strap.

    Budget
    Acetate tortoiseshell frames.
    Mid
    Quality acetate with polarised lenses.
    Investment
    Handmade acetate frames.

Wear it to

  • Weekend: Coastal lunches, markets and harbour walks.
  • Date Night: A seaside dinner; swap the loafers for polished brown if the restaurant is formal.
  • Travel: Linen forgives creasing on a long flight and looks better for it.

Season

Northern hemisphere. Wear it June to August on a European summer holiday or a North American coastal weekend.

Southern hemisphere. Built for December to February in Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and Auckland. Linen is the only sensible fabric in humid heat.
